^ to TopWhat is Megan's Law?
In the United States, Megan's Law is the commonly used name to describe a set of laws requiring law enforcement authorities to make registered sex offender information available to the public. Individual states and law enforcement entities decide the type of information and the manner in which it is released. Prior to Megan's Law, some private citizens' groups distributed information regarding specific sex offenders in their areas.
The law is named in memory of seven-year-old Megan Kanka, who was kidnapped, raped, and murdered by a repeat, violent sexual offender. Prior to Megan's death, no information was available to the Kanka family that the sexual offender moved into their residential area. Megan's home state of New Jersey passed the first example of "Megan's Law" in 1994.
